Fort Smith’s ‘Footloose’ Law Repealed

Fort Smith 'Footloose' Law

Fort Smith residents can finally kick off their Sunday shoes and cut loose.

City officials recently repealed a 1953 ordinance that outlawed public dancing on Sundays. The law had been called the “Footloose” ordinance, nicknamed after the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon about a town that had banned dancing.

City Director Andre Good encouraged the repeal after learning about the antiquated law, which had prevented public dance halls or any place with dancing on Sundays.

According to the law, public dancing “greatly endangers the public health, safety and welfare.”
