AETN Executive Director Allen Weatherly’s career included newspaper column

Allen Weatherly, executive director of the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN), died Tuesday morning. He was 64.

Mr. Weatherly, who had worked at AETN for 13 years, became executive director in 2001. He has worked in public media for more than 36 years.

“He was always happy to see you,” said David Keith, UCA journalism lecturer.

Mr. Keith, former editor of the Log Cabin Democrat, got to know Mr. Weatherly during the several years he wrote a column for the Log Cabin.

“[His column] was kinda folksy, like Allen,” Mr. Keith said.  “He would write about travel and music. Kind of like a slice-of-life type of column.”

Mr. Weatherly’s columns ranged from discussions on ethics to his fearful prediction that computer screens would replace his beloved books.

Mr. Allen’s impact extended beyond AETN, Mr. Keith said, as many UCA journalism students interned at the station, which is next door to the UCA journalism department.

See AETN for updates.
